Following the further revelations of abuse of the MEP allowances scheme prospective parliamentary candidate for the EU George Lyon has slammed the European Parliament for not taking tougher action to end the gravy train for the minority of MEPs who are clearly abusing the system.
Mr Lyon wants Europe to copy the allowances scheme used by the Scottish Parliament where MSPs allowances are published every 3 months and the parliamentary authorities administer the payment to MSPs employees on their behalf.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"This latest scandal shows how open to abuse the MEP allowances scheme is. It is an outrage that the European Parliament has failed to take action and end the gravy train for the small minority of MEPs who are clearly abusing the system.
"I want to see MEP's expenses published on a quarterly basis and the responsibility for paying their staff taken away from them and administered by the parliament. That is the system used by the Scottish Parliament and it is completely open and transparent. That would end the nonsense of MEPs setting up there own companies to pay their employees which is clearly open to abuse.
"The public must have confidence in their elected representatives and being open and transparent about how they spend public money is vital in achieving that goal."
