Commenting on formal European recognition of Scots Gaelic, giving people the right to write to and receive replies from the European Union in Gaelic, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland George Lyon said:
"The fact that less than 50,000 Scots speak Gaelic should not distract us from the need to protect and nurture our native tongue. European recognition of Gaelic is long overdue and I welcome this move in the right direction.
"The thousands of Scots who still use Gaelic as their first language should not be disbarred from interacting with institutions that affect their everyday lives. Today's announcement will further raise the profile of Gaelic at home and abroad and that can only be a good thing."
