Commenting on the launch of the Scottish Government's consultation on the implementation of compulsory electronic tagging of sheep, former NFU President and newly elected MEP for Scotland George Lyon said:
"Plans to implement EID must move forward, but so must the fight to secure further concessions.
"No one wants a situation where farmers are forced to ignore regulations because they are simply unworkable.
"I have lodged questions in Europe to discover how much money the French, Spanish and Italian Governments have spent on implementing the scheme.
"The Scottish Government must commit to meeting the cost of implementation, including the introduction of a centralised database.
"That, at least, will offer farmers and crofters some reassurance that EID can work in practical terms when the scheme is inevitably implemented."
