Commenting on the speech made by EU Agriculture Commissioner Mrs Fischer Boel at the Committee of Agriculture of the European Parliament this morning, George Lyon MEP said:
"I'm disappointed that the Commissioner did not directly address the key issue of declining stock numbers.
"The numbers of sheep and cattle continue to fall in our hill and upland areas, which suggests that there are inherent and ongoing problems with
LFA funding.
"I have therefore written to the Commissioner asking for a review of the LFA scheme.
"We need to find practical solutions to the problem of continuing decline: the status quo is just not working."
