EID plans are latest page in tome of unnecessary regulation - Lyon

September 10, 2009 12:00 AM

Commenting on the news that EU officials have ruled out any further significant concessions before the introduction of compulsory electronic tagging of sheep in Scotland, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland and former President of the NFU George Lyon said:

"By driving up regulation, the EU Commission is only succeeding in driving out sheep farmers. The introduction of the unnecessary and unworkable electronic tagging system for sheep is just the latest page in the tome of regulation the EU has imposed on the Scottish farming industry.

"The unwillingness of Commissioner Vassiliou to meet with industry representatives to discuss a constructive way to implement EID is only fuelling the fire. Unless further concessions can be agreed I fear that the EID scheme will be yet another nail in the coffin of the Scottish sheep industry."
