George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, who voiced his view that Liberal Democrats should support a referendum on Scottish independence at the party's autumn conference in Bournemouth, has welcomed the consultation with members over the issue.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"Liberal Democrats are not afraid of lively debate and I welcome any forum that allows our party members the chance to influence party policy.
"I agree with Tavish Scott and others that in the middle of one of the deepest recessions in a generation now is not the time to hold an independence referendum. But when the time is right, I believe Liberal Democrats should take a stand, take on the SNP and win on a straight yes or no question."
