Commenting on the election of the new President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, and the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Baroness Ashton, George Lyon MEP said:
"While I welcome the appointment of a woman to one of the top jobs in Europe, the unfortunate fact is that these people are the equivalent of political pygmies, unknown and unrecognisable to ordinary voters - and they will struggle to make any impact on the world stage.
"The UK Government should never have backed Blair for the top job in Europe. While Mr Blair would be recognised across the globe, it is for all the wrong reasons. After ignoring Europe for years over Iraq and the use of torture it is amazing that his partner in crime Gordon Brown put his name forward.
"I fear that the whole process has alienated more people from Europe. I have no confidence that the new President holds the authority to change this."
