George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has been invited to meet with new EU Agriculture Commissioner designate Dacian Ciolos tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December) to discuss his bid to be sworn in as Mariann Ficsher Boel's successor.
Mr Lyon wants a commitment from the Commissioner designate to make an early visit to Scotland to see at first hand the pressures that farmers in Scotland are facing. Mr Lyon will also seek reassurance that Mr Ciolos will be a staunch defender of the CAP.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"I am pleased to have an early opportunity to meet with the new Commissioner designate. There is a great deal to discuss, in terms of reform of the CAP, the threat of cuts in the budget, not to mention the folly of sheep EID
"I will make it clear that he will only get my full support if he shows a willingness to listen to and act upon the many issues we face here in Scotland.
"I will also insist that he gives me a commitment to an early visit to Scotland to see at first hand the many challenges that Scottish farmers are facing today.
"It is vital he understands the situation through Scottish eyes, and not just through a long distance lens from Brussels."
