George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has called on Conservative candidates across Scotland to clarify if they agree with Conservative plans to slash direct payments to Scottish farmers.
Tory shadow agricultural spokesman James Paice confirmed in a speech in Brussels on the 13th April that a Conservative government would end the payments to Scottish farmers.
Mr Lyon believes that these cuts would have a disastrous impact on rural communities in Scotland.
The EU payments, which are worth £550 million per year to the Scottish economy, are up for review in 2013.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"Last year, official Government figures showed EU support was greater than the total farm income.
"Cutting this vital lifeline would have devastating consequences for rural areas such as the Borders and the North East of Scotland.
"I have written to Conservative candidates in these areas asking them whether they back these plans."
