George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has written to EU Health Commissioner Dalli asking him to take account of the clear and decisive opinion of the European Parliament and agree to an amnesty for sheep farmers who breach new electronic tagging regulations.
Mr Lyon believes it makes no sense for the European Commission to push on with the unworkable and unnecessary regulations while the agricultural sector is struggling to combat the effects of the economic crisis.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"Two weeks ago the European Parliament made its view abundantly clear and sheep farmers across Europe need the Commission to back up that view.
"The Commission should be in the business of helping sheep farmers prosper. That aim will not be served by enforcing regulations which compels farmers to introduce electronic tagging during a time of severe economic downturn.
"I hope to sit down with the Commissioner in the very near future to make the case for Scottish sheep farmers, many of whom could go out of business if the EID regulations remain in place."
