George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has hit out at EU plans to ban the sale of produce by number which could see "a dozen" eggs become a thing of the past.
MEPs backed plans that will see standardised food labels indicating volume and weight but rejected an amendment put forward by Liberal Democrat MEPs to exclude eggs - and other foods sold by number - from the requirement to label by total pack weight.
Instead of buying by the dozen, British consumers could now be forced to buy their eggs by the kilo.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"It is absurd to add more red tape and expense for producers and confuse consumers who are perfectly happy to buy by the dozen.
"Those MEPs who defeated our amendment need their head examining. The European Parliament should not be in the business of dictating a 'one size fits all' approach to issues that cross cultural boundaries.
"I am pleased that the new UK coalition Government has said it will fight for our right to continue to buy our eggs by the dozen and I will continue to push for a common sense exemption for eggs to form part of the final food labelling laws."
