George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has welcomed moves by the new UK Government to seek a review of regulations governing the electronic tagging of sheep (EID) introduced at the beginning of the year.
The new Agriculture Minister James Paice MP is set to address the Council of Ministers in Brussels later today to fight for a rethink of the EID regulations that are adding unwanted and unnecessary bureaucracy on farmers and crofters.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"This is a welcome change of pace from the new coalition government.
"After years of the concerns of farmers falling on deaf ears, the new government is not only listening to the industry but actively fighting its corner on the European stage.
"The support for the European Agriculture Committee's position for a moratorium on EID penalties is also welcome.
"The fight to banish the bureaucratic burden of EID will not be easy, but this is a positive first step."
