George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has asked UK Agriculture Minister Jim Paice MP to bring European Health Commissioner Dalli to Scotland to see first hand the problems faced by Scottish farmers and crofters in implementing EID regulations.
The call comes after Mr Paice raised the issue with his European counterparts at a Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels.
Commenting after speaking to Mr Paice, Mr Lyon said:
"Although the meeting of all twenty-seven European Agriculture Ministers was largely focussed on CAP simplification, Mr Paice took the opportunity to raise the very real concerns of sheep farmers across the UK.
"EID is an example of a regulation that was brought in without an impact assessment and without thought to the practical consequences.
"As such, Mr Paice and I agree that it should be first in line for urgent review.
"I know that EID was raised in a private meeting between Mr Paice and Commissioner Dalli and that an invitation was extended to the Commissioner to visit the UK to see first hand the problems faced by sheep farmers. I am pleased he has accepted that invitation.
"Scottish sheep producers face unique challenges with the hill and upland nature of our farming so I have asked Mr Paice to bring the Commissioner to Scotland to see at first hand the practical difficulties Scottish farmers are facing in implementing EID.
"I will continue to work closely with the UK Government to bring major changes to this regulation."
