Lyon welcomes commitment on milk contracts

George Lyon, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland, has welcomed a vote of the European Agriculture Committee that brings greater transparency and honesty to the European milk market.
The legislation would introduce for the first time, written contracts will be required across the supply chain stating the volumes delivered and price paid for milk. It is hoped that this move will see dairy farmers receive a fairer price for their product at the farm-gate.
Commenting, Mr Lyon said:
"Dairy farmers have suffered from unfair selling practices for too long. The concern about their plight was clear to see at the Royal Highland Show when hundreds of farmers and consumers signed my petition calling for a fairer price at the farm-gate.
"It is gratifying to be able to come to Brussels and take steps to ensure dairy producers get a fairer price from the market place. Mandatory milk contracts will clearly set out the price, how it is calculated and what the triggers are for it to move up or down.
"The contracts should help ensure the price that dairy farmers receive for their product is clear for all to see. This level of transparency will go a long way in ensuring there is a fairer distribution of the retail price along the food chain.
"The campaign will continue until dairy farmers can make a decent living from the important job that they do."
