As someone who lives on an island, I do not think it is fair that some islands get to benefit from a cheap ferry fares scheme that boosts tourism and makes travel cheaper for people whilst others do not.
Recently the Scottish Government announced that they would extend the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET) to the Isles of Gigha, Islay and Colonsay. Whilst this is welcome news for many islanders , this move comes at a heavy price for the many other islanders.
The SNP plan to tax the majority of islanders through an inflation busting 6.5% ferry fare increase for passengers and withdrawing RET from all commercial vehicles in order to fund cuts in ferry fares to a select few islands is clearly unfair.
Let me be clear, I do not want to remove cheap ferry fares from any islands. Instead, I want all islands to benefit from the scheme.
I have asked the European Commissioner for Transport and the Competition Commissioner to investigate the actions of the Scottish Government so we can move towards a ferry fares that are fair for all.
I want to be able to show to the Scottish Government the strength of feeling from people living on Scottish islands about the need for fair ferry prices.
I hope you will join my campaign. The more people that sign, the greater the pressure we can put on the SNP Government to change its mind.
