Over 65% of adults and nearly 35% of children are either overweight or obese here in Scotland. Scotland has one of the highest levels of obesity in any OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) country - only USA and Mexico have a higher level.
That is why George Lyon MEP backed calls for the 'traffic light' system to be adopted on food packaging across the EU.
This is a system of colour-coding used on the front of packs of foods which show whether fat, saturated fats, sugars and salt are high, medium or low, illustrated through red, amber and green 'traffic lights'.
Many supermarkets and processors already use the system here in the UK and independent research shows that a system of colour-coding on the front of processed food packaging is best understood by consumers.
In June, George Lyon voted in the European Parliament voted to make the traffic light system mandatory on food packaging across the EU. Unfortunately, heavy lobbying from the food industry meant that the vote failed.
However, Scotland's Liberal Democrat MEP is continuing to call for the traffic light system to be adopted across the EU and has praised those supermarkets and producers already using the system.
Following the vote in June, the matter now rests with the Council. George Lyon MEP is urging the Council to recognise the need to improve public health across the EU and the importance of the traffic light labelling system in doing this.
